Why teach Outdoor Education as a Teacher On Call?

In my three years as a Teacher On Call (TOC), I noticed a lack of outdoor education (OE) in elementary schools. Some schools have embraced OE, while others have not. My research explored how TOCs can implement OE into public elementary schools: through shifting given lesson plans to the outdoors and communicating with other educators about OE strategies and resources.

Audience

This resource is designed for teachers on-call, classroom teachers, and administrators who are curious about implementing OE into their classes and schools. The Teaching Outdoors On Call section of the website outlines challenges and solutions I have encountered in my research, and gives teachers tips for shifting indoor lessons to the outdoors. Designed with accessibility in mind, regardless of socioeconomic status, physical abilities, or outdoor experience, the primary and intermediate lessons allow all students to engage in experiential learning in a safe and fun environment.
